Information about the Library
The University Library
of Southern Denmark
SDUB is a public library and may be used by all. The main purpose of the
library is to serve researchers and students at the University of Southern
Denmark as well as to provide library facilities for other research and
educational institutions in Fyn and the Southern part of Jylland.
Campus libraries and service points
at SDUB
The University Library of Southern Denmark is geographically spread over a
large area and the individual campus libraries and service points all have
their particular functions in relation to the library as a whole. For further details see
Esbjerg,
Kolding,
Odense,
Sønderborg,
the
Mathematical Library, the Music
Department and the Medical
Research Library - Odense University Hospital.
Collections
The University Library of Southern Denmark gives access to books,
journals, newspapers, maps, music sheets and a great number of electronic
resources. The library has about 1,2 million volumes, about 5.000
paper journals and access to more thant 9.500 electronic journals. See
collections.
Availability
Just under a half of the library's stock of books and journals are
directly available from open shelves, which means that you can fetch the
books you want to borrow yourself. The rest of the material is stocked in
closed stacks and it is necessary to make a request if you want to borrow
from it. Requested material from closed stacks is usually available for
pick-up within 1-2 days.
The main part of the material at the University Library of Southern
Denmark is registered in its library catalogue
ODIN.
You can search and make requests for material in it directly via the
Internet. Some of the older material has not been registered in
ODIN
yet but can be found in the card catalogues or printed registers –
you can get help from the staff if you want to search in the older
collections.
Search options
Computers with access to the Internet are available at all of SDUB's
campus libraries and service points so that it is possible to search in
the library catalogue
ODIN,
catalogues from other libraries, databases, journals, etc. There are also
extensive collections of handbooks, bibliographies and reference books in
the library's reference departments.
Borrowing
Most of the books and journals placed on open shelves can be taken
directly to the lending department and borrowed (with the exception of
handbooks and some journals, which are not for loan). Make a request
in
ODIN
for material, which is lent out or stored in closed stacks.
If you want to make a request for material not found in
ODIN,
a request form has to be filled in. This can be done either by filling in
the library's printed request form or via the
electronic
request form.
As a main rule, SDUB will try to obtain literature for study and
research purposes from other libraries at home and abroad free of charge.
The loan period for SDUB's material is normally one month. Some types
of material can, however, only be borrowed for shorter loan periods and
rare and valuable books have to be used in a reading room/at supervised
reading desks.
It is possible to make a request for photocopies of SDUB's material.
The number of copies must, however, comply with the law on copyright.
Books and journals for loan can be forwarded by post for a charge.
See also borrowing rules for more
information about borrowing at the library inclusive
recall
procedures and fees.
The journal circulation service
The University Library of Southern Denmark offers to circulate new
issues of printed journals to the staff at the University of Southern
Denmark. The circulation service is administrated by SDUB via
inter-departmental mail.
As soon as new issues of journals are received they are put on display
for 14 days on the journal shelves at SDUB. They are then sent in
circulation. The journal issues are sent via inter-departmental mail to
the departments/centres, where the member of staff is employed.
It is then the responsibility of the department/centre to return the
journal issue at the end of the circulation period, which is 15 days.
You can see the journals the University of Southern Denmark subscribes
to in the library’s database ODIN.
If you are interested in receiving one or more journals in circulation,

Books to your door
A service offered to all the library's users. If
you wish to apply for library registration via the electronic application
form, it is only possible for users with a Danish CPR number to borrow a
book before the library has issued a library card in accordance with the
provision of valid identification.
What does the service offer?
As a borrower you can for a charge have books and
other material available for loan sent to you, see the library's normal
library
rules. You can see in the
library's catalogue ODIN if the individual items can be borrowed or only
used on the premises.
Even though the material cannot be borrowed out of
the library, a photocopy/print can often be made for a charge (1 kr. for
an A4 photocopy/print, 3 kr. for a photocopy from a newspaper).
How does the service work?
If you are not registered as a borrower at the
University Library of Southern Denmark you can apply for registration via
the electronic new borrower - provisional
application form.
The library will then send a registration form and
a copy of of the library rules to the
address on the electronic application form requesting registration. If at
the same time you have made a request for books, 1 book will be sent to
you on loan with a bill for 50 kr. You make a request by filling in the
note field in the electronic application form.
When the library has received your signed
application form together with a copy of valid identification, a library
card, which is used for making requests and reservations directly in the
library's catalogue
ODIN
will be sent to you.
If you have made requests for several books, these
will be sent to you as "Books to your door" together with your
library card.
If you are registered as a "Books to your
door" borrower, then you will automatically be sent material for a
charge. You can change this automatic forwarding of material by contacting
the library and altering it so that you can yourself determine every time
you make a request in a note whether or not you wish to have the requested
material sent to you.
Loans are made according to the library´s normal
borrowing
rules.
How fast is the service?
When you have applied for registration as a
borrower, you will immediately be registered as a temporary borrower; you
will keep this status until the library has received your signed
application form together with a copy of valid identification.
As a temporary borrower you can borrow 1 book or a
corresponding item of material.
How long does this
take
If they are not already
lent out, books and other material for loan are sent directly by post to
the borrower at the latest the day after the request has been received. If
the material is lent out, a reservation will be made and the material will
be sent as soon as it is available.
How much does it cost
Forwarding of books,
photocopies and other material directly to a borrower is charged to the
borrower and costs 50 kr. per book. The borrower is responsible for
returning the material by post or direct delivery to one of the University
Library of Southern Denmark's service points. A label with the return
address will be sent with the material.
If the loan period is
exceeded, the borrower will be charged a fee.
Reading desks
The University Library of Southern Denmark's campus libraries and service
points have a number of studying areas and areas for group work. For more
information see the individual departments.
